NSS VISIT TO WAYANAD MUNDAKAI CHOORALMALA FLOOD AFFECTED AREAS

The NSS Unit 240 of Assabah Arts and Science College, Valayamkulam, organized a field visit to the flood-affected areas of Mundakai and Chooralmala in Wayanad. The visit aimed to provide students with a first-hand understanding of natural disasters, their causes, and their impact on human lives. It also helped them learn how communities recover and rebuild after such calamities.

To educate students about the causes of floods, landslides, and natural disasters and to understand the challenges faced by disaster-affected communities. To study the rehabilitation and relief measures taken by government and non-governmental organizations. To instill a sense of social responsibility and prepare students to contribute effectively in disaster relief efforts.

NSS volunteers visited flood-hit villages and interacted with affected families to understand their struggles and survival stories. Families shared their experiences of losing homes, farmlands, and belongings, and how they were coping with the aftermath of the disaster. The team observed the remnants of landslides, waterlogged areas, and destroyed houses, gaining insight into the destructive power of natural calamities.

Volunteers met with local authorities, rescue teams, and social workers who explained the emergency response mechanisms used during the floods. A session was conducted on how communities rebuild their lives, including government compensation programs, temporary shelters, and rebuilding efforts.

The visit highlighted the role of deforestation, soil erosion, and unplanned construction in worsening flood situations. Volunteers were shown how improper land use and climate change contribute to extreme weather conditions. The team discussed possible sustainable measures to reduce the risk of future disasters.

Enhanced Disaster Awareness: Students gained real-life exposure to the causes, impact, and aftermath of floods and landslides. Understanding Human Resilience: The visit helped them understand how affected people rebuild their lives despite losing everything. Encouraging Social Responsibility: The experience inspired many volunteers to consider participating in future disaster relief activities. Environmental Consciousness: The trip reinforced the importance of sustainable practices to prevent environmental degradation and reduce disaster risks.

The visit to the flood-affected regions of Wayanad was an eye-opening experience for NSS Unit 240 volunteers, fostering empathy, awareness, and a deeper understanding of disaster management. The unit aims to continue engaging in relief efforts and promoting disaster preparedness programs to support communities in need.
