POSTER COMPETITION FOR WORLD SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION
On 11th November 2024, in honor of World Science Day, the PG Department of Physics and the Science Club at Assabah Arts and Science College, Valayamkulam, organized a poster competition. This event aimed to promote scientific awareness, creativity, and an appreciation for science among students. It brought together undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) science students, fostering a platform for them to share ideas and celebrate the role of science in society.
The poster competition was designed to encourage students to think critically and creatively about scientific concepts, discoveries, and challenges. The theme centered on “Science and Sustainable Development,” in line with the global emphasis on how science can contribute to addressing pressing environmental and social issues. Participants were encouraged to explore sub-themes such as climate change, renewable energy, health science, technological innovation, and sustainable agriculture.
The event was coordinated by Sajna K. V., Assistant Professor of the PG Department of Physics, who managed the planning, promotion, and logistics of the event. Under her guidance, a team of student volunteers from the Science Club helped with organizing, setting up the venue, and coordinating with participants to ensure a smooth execution.
The competition saw enthusiastic participation from science students across both UG and PG levels. Students from departments including Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology were invited to present their posters, creating a diverse and interdisciplinary display of scientific thought.
The competition began at 10:00 AM with an inaugural address by Dr. M. R. Lovely, Head of the Department of Physics, who highlighted the significance of World Science Day and the role of science in advancing society. She encouraged students to use their scientific knowledge creatively and responsibly to contribute to a sustainable future.
Each participant or team displayed their poster on provided boards and was allotted time to present their ideas to the judges and audience. The presentations showcased a variety of scientific topics, with posters ranging from the mechanics of renewable energy technologies to the impact of climate change on biodiversity. Students demonstrated in-depth research, creative visualization, and a strong grasp of their topics.
The posters were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising faculty members from various science departments. The judging criteria included:
- Scientific Accuracy: The accuracy and relevance of scientific content.
- Creativity and Originality: How creatively the ideas were presented and visualized.
- Clarity and Presentation: The clarity of explanation and overall presentation style.
- Relevance to Theme: Adherence to the theme of science and sustainable development.
After careful deliberation, the judges awarded the following prizes:
- First Place – Fathima Neha (2nd BSc Psychology)
- Second Place –
- Mehroosha Parwin (1st MSc Physics)
- Mohammed Adnan (2nd BSc Psychology)
- Third Place –
- Shamsiya K S (1st MSc Physics )
- Asina Panthakkan (2nd MSc Physics)
The winners received cash prizes, while all participants were awarded certificates of appreciation.
The event concluded with a closing speech by the Principal, who praised the hard work of both students and organizers. He emphasized the importance of scientific literacy and the responsibility of future scientists to use their knowledge for the betterment of society. Feedback from participants and faculty was overwhelmingly positive, with students expressing appreciation for the opportunity to communicate science in a creative format.
