The PG Department of Food Science and Technology, Assabah Arts and Science College, Valayamkulam, organized a two day Shigella Awareness Programme. On Monday, 06 July 2026, the pamphlet distribution inauguration was done by Prof. Mohammed Koya M N, Principal Assabah Arts and Science College. The pamphlets were distributed to nearby hotels and bakery shops by third year BSc food technology students.
A documentary prepared by the postgraduate students was presented at the Assabah College Conference Hall, which was inaugurated by Venugopal, Health inspector, Family Health Centre, Alamkode on 7 July 2026. The students were introduced to the causes, symptoms, transmission, and prevention of shigellosis through an informative audiovisual presentation.
As part of the extension activity, the department organized an awareness programme at GHSS Kokkur School. Faculty members and postgraduate students interacted with school students, explaining the importance of proper handwashing, safe food handling, and clean drinking water through simple and engaging demonstrations. Informative pamphlets containing key facts about Shigella, its symptoms, prevention, and healthy hygiene practices were distributed to all participants.
The programme successfully created awareness among both college and school students regarding the prevention of shigellosis and emphasized the role of individual responsibility in maintaining personal and community health. The initiative received positive feedback from participants and strengthened the department's commitment to community outreach and public health education.
