NSS-240 was launched during August - 2008 in Assabah arts and science college under Calicut University to develop social service skills, among students. Our Second principal Prof: C Thareekuty (Retired MES Ponnani college, Department of Physics) initiated all his efforts to establish an NSS Unit in our college. Mr.Baiju.MK Department of Commerce (2008-2012, 2014-2015) was appointed as the first programme officer. From 2008 onwards NSS 240 conducted various programmes like community and awareness programmes, health programmes etc., Our First ten days camp was conducted in Pattithara Grama Panchayath at Thrithala.The project was the construction of a mini dam in Bharatha Puzha for agricultural puposes. It was one of the major works done by our NSS 240 unit in the year December2008. Many students were attracted towards NSS as its only aim is to provide social service.

Each year 50 students are enrolled to NSS Unit as per the university norms.The selected students are then provided with an orientation class in the month of June , which help them to be aware of the forthcoming programs .The students are then selected to the camp every year according to their choice .The unit oriented variety of programmes like environmental activities, awareness class, motivation class etc which are conducted both on working and non working days.

The unit organises Blood Donation camp every year in association with BOK Thrissur unit ever since.With the initiation of all students and unit, NSS established a blood bank to arrange blood to the needful patients.A Red Ribbon club also is working in our college from 2010onwards and NSS unit organized different programmes in association with Red Ribbon club.

In 2018, NSS - 240 constructed and donated a house as a part of the project “ABHAYAM” from the University of Calicut for a homeless man at kokkur under the Co-Ordination of Mr.Praveen KU as the Programme officer (2015 to 2019). The students were jubilant after the completion of the house as this was the most unique project by our unit. It revealed the community harmony and dedication of our volunteers.

The unit organises a seven day residential camp every year during the Christmas vacations. Both NSS volunteers and teachers actively take part in the camp and its activities.Students are often assigned with tasks which they do enthusiastically.University projects are also allotted to them. Ordination of Mr. Rajesh Kannan as the Programme Officerwas the last camp by our unit.In the past two years the students are not able to conduct the seven days residential camp due to the covid pandemic situation. But in 2020 the unit organized an online camp “E-Thanal” which was a totally new experience to our students. Even in this covid pandemic, NSS 240 unit actively organise various programmes through online by strictly following covid protocol.
